How to Calculate Body Frame Size and What It Means for Your Ideal Weight
Ideal body weight ranges are always given for medium frames โ but small and large frames shift the range by 5-10%. Here is how to measure your frame size using wrist circumference and elbow breadth.
Most ideal weight tables give a single range, but a large-framed person carries more bone mass and muscle naturally than a small-framed person at the same height. Frame size adjusts the target accordingly.
Wrist Circumference Method
Measure wrist circumference at the narrowest point (just below the wrist bone).
For women (height 5'2" / 157cm and under):
Small frame: wrist < 5.5 inches (14.0cm)
Medium frame: 5.5-5.75 inches (14.0-14.6cm)
Large frame: wrist > 5.75 inches (14.6cm)
For women (height 5'2"-5'5" / 157-165cm):
Small: < 6.0 inches (15.2cm)
Medium: 6.0-6.25 inches (15.2-15.9cm)
Large: > 6.25 inches (15.9cm)
For women (height over 5'5" / 165cm):
Small: < 6.25 inches (15.9cm)
Medium: 6.25-6.5 inches (15.9-16.5cm)
Large: > 6.5 inches (16.5cm)
For men (all heights):
Small: wrist < 5.5 inches (14.0cm)
Medium: 5.5-6.5 inches (14.0-16.5cm)
Large: > 6.5 inches (16.5cm)
Height-to-Wrist Ratio Method (r value)
r = Height (cm) / Wrist circumference (cm)
For men:
r > 10.4: small frame
r = 9.6-10.4: medium frame
r < 9.6: large frame
For women:
r > 11.0: small frame
r = 10.1-11.0: medium frame
r < 10.1: large frame
Example: woman, 165cm, wrist 15cm
r = 165 / 15 = 11.0 โ borderline small/medium frame
Adjusting Ideal Weight for Frame Size
Using Hamwi formula as base (medium frame):
Men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet
Frame size adjustments:
Small frame: subtract 10% from base ideal weight
Large frame: add 10% to base ideal weight
Example: woman, 165cm (5'5"), medium frame
Hamwi base: 45.5 + (2.2 x 5) = 45.5 + 11 = 56.5 kg
Small frame: 56.5 x 0.90 = 50.9 kg
Large frame: 56.5 x 1.10 = 62.2 kg
The 12kg range between small and large frames is significant โ
this is why a single "ideal weight" number is always misleading.
Frame Size vs Body Composition
Frame size measures skeletal structure, not muscle or fat. A person can be large-framed but have low muscle mass โ the frame size adjustment applies only to the skeleton's contribution to weight, not overall body composition. Body fat percentage is a separate and more clinically meaningful measure. An athlete with a small frame carrying significant muscle may correctly weigh above the small-frame ideal weight range without being overweight.
