How to Calculate How Many Sheets of Plywood You Need

Plywood is sold in standard sheet sizes and ordered in whole sheets. Here is how to minimise waste through efficient cutting, calculate the number of sheets, and account for saw kerf.

Ordering too little plywood means a costly second trip; too much wastes money. The key skill is calculating how many pieces you need from each sheet, minimising off-cuts.

Standard Sheet Sizes

UK standard plywood sheet: 2440mm x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft) Also available: 1220mm x 1220mm (4ft x 4ft) Thickness: 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm, 25mm Total area per sheet: 2.44 x 1.22 = 2.977 m2 (approximately 3 m2) For simple area coverage (e.g. subfloor, wall sheathing): Sheets needed = Area to cover / 2.977 m2 per sheet Add 10% for waste and staggered joints Example: 45 m2 subfloor Base sheets: 45 / 2.977 = 15.1 sheets With 10% waste: 15.1 x 1.10 = 16.6 sheets -- order 17 sheets

Cutting Optimisation (Cutting List)

When cutting specific pieces, plan the cut layout first. Account for saw kerf (blade width): Circular saw: 2-3mm kerf Table saw: 3-4mm kerf Example: need 6 pieces of 800mm x 400mm Standard sheet (2440 x 1220): Along 1220mm edge: 1220 / 400 = 3 pieces (400+400+400=1200, 20mm waste) Along 2440mm edge: 2440 / 800 = 3 pieces (800+800+800=2400, 40mm waste) (Kerf at each cut: 3mm x 2 crosscuts = 6mm, absorbed in waste) Pieces per sheet: 3 x 3 = 9 pieces Total pieces needed: 6 Sheets needed: 1 sheet (with 3 pieces spare) Always sketch the cutting layout before ordering -- different cut configurations can halve the number of sheets needed.

Calculating Sheets for Cabinet or Box Making

Flat-pack cabinet example: Top: 600mm x 500mm -- 1 piece Bottom: 600mm x 500mm -- 1 piece Sides: 500mm x 720mm -- 2 pieces Back: 600mm x 720mm -- 1 piece (thinner ply often used) Shelf: 570mm x 470mm -- 1 piece Total: 6 pieces Optimising on one 2440 x 1220 sheet: Row 1 (along 2440): 600+600+600 = 1800 from 2440 (tops, bottom, back) Remaining 640mm x 1220mm: 2 sides (500mm wide fits with 20mm to spare) Shelf: from off-cuts (570mm fits in remaining space) Result: all 6 pieces from 1 sheet ✓ Without planning: many beginners buy 2 sheets for the same job
